I assume that the council is going to persue the manufacturer/installer of the lift to claw some money back? They have an obligation to the IOW council tax payers to do so.

at least its going to be a vertical lift, not some experimental rubbish. hopefully they will also buy from a UK company even if it costs a little bit more. I would rather they spend our money on a decent lift that will last rather than some cheap rubbish that will need replacing again in 10 years. And of course the council should persue the original lift… Read more »

How can they install a vertical lift when the building has been designed on a incline because it has been built around a large piece of rock? What’s going to happen about the roof?

i would imagine its not too difficult to extend the corridor at the top and install a lift at the end. or maybe to drill away some of the rockface and install a vertical lift with a corridor at the bottom. What im wondering is why dont they install an escalator instead? tried and tested technology that works on an incline. why not install one of those… Read more »

ok, make it one of the flattened escalators like they have at airports, but installed on an incline. or… perhaps wheelchairs can use the ramp as they do now…

As long as the Botannical Gardens stay in public ownership that’s the main thing.
Keep up the campaign Ventnor Blog and Friends of the Botannical Gardens

Isn’t there a slope already in place that wheelchairs/pushchairs etc can use?

This is astonishing! £220000 of public money spent to help a private company recoup a £7000 loss on which we only have their word, and when you actually look into it the incline lift at the Botanic Garden now is STILL WORKING! It isn’t broken, it’s just a bit unreliable. How about asking a/ How many days this year has the current lift actually been out of… Read more »

Both lifts at the Botanic Garden were in use today (2/10/2010) and working well. Maybe the £220,000 wont be needed after all and could be spent on the Winter Gardens instead.

‘Both’ lifts? I thought there was only 1. Anyway, according to Marc Tuckey (IOW Ghost Walks), its due to paranormal activity on the site that the lift dosn’t work sometimes. He says there has been no fault found with it following numerous inspections.

There is a vertical lift from the ground floor to the first floor. There is another, inclined lift from there to the top floor. And visa versa downwards.
Could the County Council be a paranormal phenomenon? They don’t seem normal to me.

I bumped into a friend of mine who works at County Hall today. She assures me that there is ‘a lot to come out’ regarding liftgate. All very embarassing.
