Following our report last week about the future of the libraries on the Isle of Wight, imminent cuts are confirmed in Cabinet papers.
We have just seen the full Isle of Wight council cut proposals which have just been outlined in preparation of the December Cabinet Meeting.
Here’s what they say about Libraries …
The Council has 11 libraries, 3 museums and a wide range of archive material (some of which is not in adequate storage). Libraries play an important part in the life of a community as well as their book lending function. However, it is unlikely that the council will be able to maintain the current size and shape of the service.
It is, therefore, proposed to reshape the service during the next financial year, saving £763,000 in 2011/12 and £833,000 in a full year (2012/13). A consultation will be launched following a Cabinet Member delegated decision report as soon as is practical after the date of this meeting.
Call in will be disapplied to this element of the report to allow the report on consultation to be considered as soon as possible. This consultation will inform a final decision in the new year.
