The appeal for the new Cowes lifeboat station will benefit from a gruelling sponsored walk around the Isle of Wight this weekend, involving Cowes lifeboat crew members Heather Lambden and her partner, Alasdair Boden.
The walk, called ‘Doogles Dawdle’, is in memory of Heather’s 27 year old sister, Lorna, who died unexpectedly just before Christmas in London, where she worked as a paramedic for the ambulance service.
100km in 24 hours
Heather, her father, Roy, friends and work colleagues of Lorna’s decided that a 100 kilometer walk in 24 hours around the Isle of Wight would be an appropriate way to remember a person who liked to undertake tough challenges in her spare time.
Money raised from the walk will be split between the London Air Ambulance and the new £1-million Cowes lifeboat station appeal, recently launched by the well known actress, Celia Imrie.
“This is a seriously tough challenge,” said Heather. “Before I started training for this I had never walked more than a couple of miles at one go, let alone 100 kilometers. I know that Lorna would have been the first to sign up for the walk, and set the pace for all of us to follow.”
Remembering Lorna’s feats
She recalled that Lorna’s feats included the London Marathon and trekking to the Everest Base Camp.
The walkers are due to embark on their walk from the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Cowes Castle at 9 am on Saturday (18th June). They will walk around the Island in an anti-clockwise direction, following where possible the Island’s coastal path.
Lorna, of Globe Close, Harpenden, died suddenly on 17 December last year. She was a paramedic with aspirations to work for London Air Ambulance. Lorna was nicknamed Doogle within her family – hence the round the Island walk being called ‘Doogles Dawdle’.
