Four Councillors Volunteer For Care Worker Day. No Conservatives

This update has been received from John Luckett – Ed.

Pen on paperFollowing my written invitation to ALL Isle of Wight Councillors to work with a care worker for a day (link), I am pleased to report that four Councillors (listed below) have taken up the challenge and shifts will be facilitated for them in the New Year.

  • Jonathan Bacon
  • Chris Welsford
  • Patrick Joyce
  • Rodney Downer

No Conservatives yet
Sadly no one from Conservative ruling group has accepted – but I live in hope that maybe more than one will be brave enough.

I received an e-mail from one of the Conservative Councillors indicating that Mr Pugh was going to respond direct to me following my Open Letter and the issues I raised. As yet I still have not had a written response, I hope he does not think his verbal response will suffice.

This also indicates that Mr Pugh will be responding on behalf of ALL Conservative Councillors.

A ‘visit’ no substitute for what it’s like
Mr Pugh said at Cabinet that he would be prepared to visit establishments, but this is no substitute for experiencing what actually is involved in caring for someone. Far from “inappropriate” I think it would be wholly appropriate for the very people who control the resources to gain the insight into the consequences of their decisions.

Therefore – my invitation remains open…
There is still time before Budgets are voted through in February for Councillors to take advantage of this opportunity enabling them to make informed decisions.

Also, after stating publicly in response to my question that they vote freely and not en bloc at Cabinet Meeting, I am puzzled as to why he feels it necessary to write on his colleague’s behalf.

Does he not trust his fellow Councillors to respond how he wishes?
Or contradictory to his statement have they been told NOT to respond to me?

Apparently this issue has moved on and rules have been published in local media that show block voting goes on (link), so I now find it hard to view any response from Mr Pugh with any credibility. It is also not a nice feeling to appear to have been lied to publicly.

State Of The Island Debate called for
On positive side I welcome any action and discussion such as a State Of The Island Debate called for by Cllr Stephens and have already offered my support for this.

Anything, which means those vulnerable members of our Island community stand a better chance of getting the support they need and that our Council (whatever political persuasion) are more transparent and accountable for their actions.

How disappointing that no Conservative councillors have responded to this request. Come on, at least one of you should show a little courage and see what actually happens. What harm can it do?

Good old Jonathan Bacon I don’t think anybody quite understands how amazing this guy is at what he does for us….and well done to the other three too!

Nice one Pugh. I guess you`ll be busy having afternoon tea with Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub.

What brilliant news, lets hope they spend the day thinking how hard these work 365 days a year as a odd day can sometimes come across as exciting rather than the real reality of what it is… I work on the chain ferry so im assuming that they will give that a go as well, as we to are being effected

Hi VB, I read this article with great interest, Being a PA/care worker looking after a 10 year old boy who has Autism,Right sided hemiplegia, primary nocturnal enurisis and learning disabilities. I would love to see anyone involved with the decision making to take up your challenge and I applaud those councillors that have indeed taken up this one day challenge. The boy I look after is classified… Read more »

To be fair to the Tory councillors, they are good at changing colours. They have been true blue, green and have now turned yellow.

My hat is off to those councillors who have seen fit to take up this offer. It’s deeply disappointing that not one from the ruling group has done so. But, be honest, are we surprised?

As you say, it is not surprising. It is much easier to make hard monetary decisions if you keep the personal and human implications at arms length.

Quite a few of the Tory councillor’s are old enough to need a carer.

Well at least they can rely upon a visit from David!

Well done to the 4 councillors who have taken up the challenge, as for the rest of them, SHAME ON YOU! Being a carer takes a great deal of hard work, dedication and a caring personality. Caring for someone can mean helping them with getting washed and dressed, assist at mealtimes, taking them to the lavatory and help with other things too personal to mention. A good… Read more »

@rea well said. I doubt very much if they would last the day shift, and let’s not forget this is a 24 hour shift not the 9-5 dolly parton council office jobs these decision makers are used to. My hat goes off to the chain ferry workers that do operate a service needed by the people of the island, which without this service we would see an… Read more »

I’m not suprised no Tory’s have signed up for this. In my experience the Conservatives are only concerned about themselves and their wealthy friends!

In my opinion it’s the younger Tory politicians (Thatcher’s babes) who are the worst for arrogance and selfish behaviour. They’re often aggressive like Cameron, power hungry like Blair and see politics as a money making career instead of serving and representing their constituents.

We ought to have a system like they had in China during the cultural revolution. All those in high flying positions were forced to work in the paddy fields for a few months to see how the other half lived. Imagine Mr Pugh and his other cronies having to clean the toilets in a care home or on a bin round when its freezing and piddling down.… Read more »

Spot on there Asite. Those in their 30’s are the worst. Brought up on a diet of I’m first, me second, anything left I’ll have it. Very demanding of others who provide services and will complain if so much as an undotted I or uncrossed T is presented to them. They have a philosophy of “I always get what I want” and will argue the toss till… Read more »

The Tory councillors, led as they are by Pugh in every respect, really need to engage with the electorate instead of holding us in clear contempt. They should take the OPPORTUNITY to work a shift in a care home. This would show us that future decisions that they take regarding social care may at least be informed decisions rather than lamely taking the party line dictated by Pugh.… Read more »

Jonathon and Chris gave tremendous support to us when we fought to keep Westminster House open, does not surprise me that once again they have stood up to be counted.
