Ventnor Winter Gardens May Re-open By Summer 2013

The Isle of Wight Planning Committee gave approval yesterday for the proposed development of the Ventnor Winter Gardens.

Manser drawing of Winter GardensNow that approval has been granted, the sale of the building from the Isle of Wight council to The Hambrough Group will be able to move forward.

The committee gave conditional approval for significant structural repairs and maintenance to upgrade and improve existing facilities at the venue, as well as create a hotel by extending out with East and West wings.

Pleased and excited
Michelin-star chef, Robert Thompson, told VB this afternoon, “We’re really pleased and excited about the approval and that we can now get on with it! It has taken a fair amount of time to get to this stage and it’s very unfortunate that the building has been closed and has looked worse each day.

“We are looking to get started very quickly on the changes to the building and also to keeping people up to date with the progress.

“Although we do now have planning permission, we have still to finalise contracts etc., with The Isle of Wight Council and also to finalise plans together with far more detailed drawings with our architect.”

Plans to reopen by summer 2013
Those keen to see the venue back in operation will be pleased to hear that although nothing is certain, the group do hope it will be be open for the summer 2013.

Finishing, he said, “We have received a huge amount of support since starting this project and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you all to the restored building and to adding to Ventnor’s revival.”

Very glad to hear that the Winter Gardens will be back in use by Summer 2013.We met there at the Tuesday night dance on 12th August 1958, had our honeymoon at the Monte Carlo Hotel at the west end of the esplanade 2 years later and in recent years have spent at least one week on the island. We were sorry to see the poor state of… Read more »

Sorry to burst your bubble Roy, but the last given date of completion was Summer 2014. Although, no doubt, that will shift again. Fingers crossed it’ll open this decade.

With all the approved building work taking place on and around the Esplanade, and given that there is only the one road for lorry access I suspect that ALL of Ventnor may well be closed until 2015!…. Just imagine the total chaos with all the wagons and sundry workers cars and vans not including the odd tourist who braves the dust and noise and lack of parking!!… Read more »

How many cooks does it take to open the Winter Gardens?

None, but don’t criticise the the Hambrough group as chefherpes is not to be trifled with.

They seem to be very much in the ‘You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs’ stage.

(It had occurred to me how unfortunate that one change of letter would be enough to take the appetite away).

How many businessmen does it take to keep changing a lot of chefs? Only one, but they all have to leave by “mutual consent”.

Why did the chef cross the road? To get to the other side before his kitchen fell into a sink-hole.

Well they are setting themselves up for ridicule by making announcements like this and are undermining their credibility given that its 30°C and the WG looks derelict. As for chefhermes putting the rough in Hambrough by insulting local people on twitter for daring to question the mighty Hambrough Group. And coming on here telling us its our fault for electing the Council after they have been given… Read more »
