Islanders are being invited to vote for their favourite of four designs celebrating the life of a famous Island resident.
Later this year, a new piece of artwork consisting of three enamel panels will be placed on the outside wall on the corner of Newport’s Little London Car Park, opposite Quay Arts in celebration of world-renowned seismologist John Milne.
Lived in Shide
Milne lived in Shide on the Isle of Wight from 1895 until his death in 1913 and is widely credited as revolutionising the study of earthquakes by inventing a new type of seismograph – called the horizontal pendulum seismograph – while he worked in Japan.
Four artists – Lisa Traxler (pictured), Lisa Wilkens, Deborah Richards and Kevin Dean – have been shortlisted as the final four and the public now get the chance to vote on the design they want to see installed at the site adjacent to Quay Arts.

To see the designs and make their vote, people should log on to www.iwight.com/milnecommission to read about the project and each design.
They can then be viewed by clicking on the link in the middle of the page. Voters should read all of the information before voting to ensure they make an informed choice and to get an idea of the voting criteria.
Alternatively people can vote in person at Quay Arts, just by the cafe.
Vote by 17th July
The design with the most votes after the closing date on 17 July will be awarded the commission and their artwork made by local firm AJ Wells.
As well as his world-famous seismology work, John Milne was also a keen photographer and some of his works can be found at Carisbrooke Castle’s museum, as well as viewed online at www.historicimages.co.uk.
Following his death, his remains were buried at St Paul’s Church in Newport.
