Festival logo:Thirty young carers from the Island will be given a well-earned break from their caring responsibilities by attending a weekend of activities at a mainland festival.

They will be guests at the Young Carers Festival held at YMCA Fairthorne Manor in Botley, Hampshire over the weekend of 29 June to Sunday 1 July.

A weekend of fun and friendship
Now in its 13th year, the festival, gives young carers access to a weekend of fun and friendship. It also offers the opportunity of a short break from their caring role while at the same time relaxing – and sharing experiences with – young people with similar caring responsibilities.

This year’s event will have the added attraction of hosting an edition of BBC Radio 4’s topical Any Questions programme. As well as broadcasting live from the venue, the programme will also engage with Young Carers to find out what matters to them.

Very special weekend
Dawn Cousins, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for children’s services and education, said: “The Island youngsters would be among around 1,800 young carers to attend the festival organised by the Children’s Society and YMCA Fairthorne Manor.

“I am delighted that 30 young carers from the Island are able to attend this event,” Councillor Cousins said.

“The festival is a very special weekend where each of these amazing young people is able to forget their caring duties for a while and spend time with peers, make new friends and share stories. The weekend is full of activities to help them ‘switch off’ for the weekend, including sporting challenges, rock climbing, crafts, discos, bands on a special festival stage and a massive outdoor party.

“The council is delighted to support the event that rewards some of the most dedicated and deserving young people on the Island.”

Thanks to Wightlink
Councillor Cousins thanked ferry company Wightlink who had donated ferry travel for the Island delegates.
