Steve Beynon: We ask him about rumours of his departure

We’d been hearing rumours from quite a number of varied sources around the Island that Chief Exec of Isle of Wight council, Steve Beynon, was planning to leave.

It’s been long and widely understood that he was planning to depart after the May 2013 local election, so it was all the more surprisingly that the latest rumours were that he was going to bring that forward and planned to leave before Christmas 2012, or at the very least, before the elections.

Going before Christmas?
On The Wight put this to Steve a little while ago and he came back with admirable speed saying, “Your sources are incorrect. I have no intention of leaving early in 2013 or before the election in May.”

We asked him to clarify if it was still his plan to leave after next year’s elections. His reply was a little more cryptic – “I am 60 next year and so able to retire. How soon after the election is yet to be decided.”

Updates to follow
He’s committed himself to let us know when it’s been firmed up, so we’ll let you know when we hear.

Totally agree. Nimbys. Just like the people that live near Gatwick Airport and oppose the proposed new runway…. HELLO, you chose to live near an airport….The smell of seaweed stinks. HELLO you chose to live near the sea….

Spot on. These peoples views are part of the reason Shanklin has fallen on hard times. A thriving local economy needs to use natural resource like ‘a beach’ to add value, jobs and bring investment. Standing senselessly and selfishly in the way of market forces stifles enterprise and causes long term damage. I agree we need control, but outright refusal is not control, it’s thoughtless. Outdated and… Read more »

Reminds me of a former neighbour of mine, a little man who bought a cottage next to the church and whined continually about the bells!

Unfortunately the island still lives in the 1900’s still wanting things to stay the same but nothing ever does we have to move on. Can’t have a tunnel or Road even with a toll option to keep mainland at bay but would help keep day trips coming shops could remain open until Christmas then close till spring but this is always a no battle, I’m fed up… Read more »
