In a week’s time the Independent-controlled Executive of the Isle of Wight council will be discussing the further closure of public toilets on the Island, starting off with a ‘consultation’.
What is suggested is something called a Community Toilet Scheme,(CTS) – in short, a scheme to persuade local businesses, shops, cafes, doctor surgeries, restaurant and hotels – 108 participants in total – to open their toilets up to the public in exchange of a payment of £200- £1,000/year.
Conservative plan
This is something that the last Conservative administration tried to implement around the Isle of Wight, after the huge public outcry against the last toilets closures in 2010.
The official paperwork says, “The implementation of a CTS could result in significant savings for the council but, at the same time it may result in a wider geographical spread of facilities across the Island and a better service than that currently available.”
The council’s 41 now-remaining public toilets have been rated as High, Medium and Low/medium and Low for conversion into CTS.
