Members of the Planning Committee will later today (Tuesday) consider the onshore elements for the Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre at Flowersbrook.

The audio is not always clear, but we hope to cover the first item on the agenda live for those who can’t make it along.

The live updates that appear below from inside the chamber at County Hall will automatically refresh in the page. However, to see latest comments added to the article, you’ll need to refresh the page. Items in double brackets (()) indicate comment from the author.

52 vehicle movements at Flowers Brook could have a disastrous effect on the already unstable undercliff and its close environs. The council should ensure that the applicant PTEC is insured for any resultant damage to property since PTEC is effectively a £100 company with an insubstantial balance sheet.

Why has the Council had to put £1m into the project? This is money we just cannot afford unless there is some definite return. Why hasn’t the L.E.P helped to find the cash? Why are the Trades Unions not there? How many jobs for people in Ventnor are going to be created? How many apprentices and young people are they going to train? Will the island get some… Read more »

The result will mean that the IOW Council will NEVER be able to refuse any planning application It goes against many of the core matters that are in place to protect the fundamental concepts of the Island plan

Tidal energy is highly inefficient way of harvesting energy. The non recurring investment required to plan, design, procure and install the tide turbines, power sub station and long term maintenance and servicing equates to costs > £150m, meaning it would take > 150years to recover the investment. This makes no sense. Sir Alan Suger would make mince meat of such a proposal, which is doomed to fail… Read more »

Also, PTEC is not world leading. They are equivalent to a small scale research institution. There is a huge difference between research and business engineering company which makes a profit.

Do any of our councillors have any experience in project management? Clearly not… Just look at Cowes Enterprise college.

When I built Steephill Castle (1833-35) there were complaints from the gentry because I demolished the Cottage Orne of Island Governor Lord Dysart. The local farmers and fishermen complained that the development was “out of character” for the area and would impact adversely on their businesses. However, this was when Ventnor started to become a town with all the benefits for business development and for invalids with… Read more »

Perhaps not a good example “John Hambrough”? Wasn’t Steephill Castle itself a pretentious Regency folly that eventually had to be demolished because the owners could not afford its upkeep? Further as a Fellow of the Linnaean Society (1856-1861) and reputed to be a zealous cultivator of the island flora are you not a little concerned about the potential impact on local flora and fauna ,acknowledged in the… Read more »

My Dear Cicero, Steephill Castle lasted 130 years. Today, The Linnaean Society is very much concerned with fossil fuels, climate change and the impact on wildlife. The minor impact on wildlife at Flowersbrook cannot be compared with the ever-increasing warming of the globe we inhabit.
Sincerely, John Hambrough

‘ The site at La Falaise is important for tourism car parking ‘ A small point but it didn’t seem to bother them when they wanted to build a hideous boatyard on the Esplanade!
Other than that it’s yet another dodgy Isle of Wight council deal. Steve Stubbings and cohorts should hang their shabby heads in shame.
