Flood alert issued on the Isle of Wight

The Environment Agency have issued a flood alert this morning (Wednesday) for the Eastern Yar.

They say flooding is possible for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge and warn residents to be prepared. Low lying land and roads will be affected first

About 22mm of rain has fallen in the last 18 hours. 10mm to 15mm more rain is forecast over the catchment for the remainder of today, Wednesday 27th January, clearing about 6pm. The river is rising and levels in the upper catchment may not peak until later tonight and those downstream of Sandown until tomorrow evening.

The upper catchments may experience some out of bank flooding possibly affecting Arreton, Alverstone, Langbridge, Newchurch and access tracks to Horringford may be flooded. In Sandown, Golf Links Road and Morton Common Road may be flooded as well the ditches around the Fort Holiday Caravan Park may also experience flooding.

Property level protection should be deployed as a precautionary measure.
