A rally organised by Sandown county councillor Heather Humby, was well supported on Saturday morning.
Around 280 concerned residents turned out to march up and down the High Street in protest at the planned closure of nine of the eleven libraries on the Isle of Wight.
Sandown library is earmarked to remain open part-time until 31 March 2012 with “a view to supporting the development of community-run libraries in their areas”.
Others gathered after the march at the doors of the library to hear Cllr Humby speak about saving the library with around 300 residents from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin, Freshwater and Ventnor present.
Cllr Humby will present the signed petitions to the full IW Council meeting this coming Wednesday (19th) along with comments and suggestions made by members of the public on Saturday.
