On Friday, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, Dr Mary Bousted tweeted that the NEU grew by 34,000 new members since the ballot announcement 11 days ago.
This is somewhat unexpected and is surprising.
Isle of Wight members
We know, some of those new members will be based on the Isle of Wight, as many non-members have spoken with us and asked about joining the day of action on Wednesday. Making the decision to strike is far from easy.
Their decision to assert themselves and fight to improve education does them credit. We can only hope that the government listens quickly and acts accordingly.
Seven per cent increase in members on the Island
Mr Shreeve added,
“After the national ballot results, the local NEU were inundated with membership enquiries and how people could join the strike. We also had enquiries from NEU support staff, who are not on strike, as they failed to reach the threshold. Enquiries have been received too from staff in other unions asking about whether and how they can help
“Despite the Isle of Wight being a relatively small area, astonishingly 57 new members have joined since the ballot announcement – this is an impressive membership increase of about 7 percent in less than two weeks.
The fact that so many more new staff have joined speaks volumes. It illustrates the depth of their concerns.”
