This in from Independent Group of Councillors. In their own words. Ed
The Island Independents can confirm that, to date, 35 people have come forward to stand across the Island as Independents.
Ian Stephens, group co-ordinator said: “We are pleased to have such enthusiastic and pro-active people coming forward who want to effect real change for the Island. They truly care about the people in their areas. They are passionate about working for their communities rather than political parties controlled from above.”
Hoping to improve the democratic process
The Island Independent Councillors and prospective Independent candidates are a group of individuals who hope to improve the democratic process on the Island by voting according to the wishes of their constituents, rather than the dictates of a political party or whip.
Julia Hill, Independent Candidate for Whippingham and Osborne said; “We have an extremely strong set of candidates this year and a very good chance of gaining a majority in County Hall. If we don’t work together with a view to forming a solid group in May, and keep ourselves completely separate from one another, then the Conservatives could, in theory, become the ruling group with the minority of overall seats. It is therefore essential that we work together to ensure positive change after the election.”
If anyone is considering standing as an independent but found the idea of being out on a limb daunting, the Island Independents would be happy to support you through the process.
