91-year-old Marguerite taking on a six mile walk in aid of Isle of Wight Mencap

91-year-old Marguerite Burfitt, a resident at Hartford Care’s The Elms Nursing Home in Bembridge, is taking on a six mile walk in aid of the Isle of Wight Mencap.

Marguerite, who has lived at The Elms Nursing Home since August 2020, will be undertaking the challenge with the home’s Activities Coordinator, Lucas Valvona, on Sunday 11th June, starting at Appley Tower in Ryde at 9am.

The pair will walk the six miles along the coast to The Old Mill Wall at St Helens.

Isle of Wight Mencap
The Isle of Wight Mencap supports people with learning disabilities.

Its vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to, and included.

Former midwife and tutor
During her career, Marguerite worked in nursing and midwifery in London and Plymouth.

Her biggest achievement was passing her Midwifery Teaching Diploma and becoming a midwifery tutor.

Love of walking
Marguerite’s love of walking stems from herself and her husband being keen ramblers and they have walked the length of the south coast whilst holidaying together.
