A new novel by an Isle of Wight resident is set to hit the shelves this spring, blending historical intrigue with elements of the supernatural.
Austin Macauley Publishers has announced the upcoming release of Just a Slight Chance, a novel by Christopher Lander. The book will be available from 25th April 2025.
Christopher, who moved to the Isle of Wight in his later years, has spent time writing, studying basic mathematics and learning about computers. His latest work promises a mix of mystery, humour and psychic phenomena.
A plot rooted in history and intrigue
The novel follows the unusual consequences of a handwritten freedom of information request submitted to a Borough Council. The request, made by a war photographer recently returned from Iraq, demands access to ancient photographs allegedly produced before the invention of the camera.
Suspicious of the implications, the Westminster Government orders MI6 to track down three UK citizens who possess psychic abilities—though they are unaware of their gifts. These individuals must also have an interest in history and a fondness for pub-going. Two are chosen from the market town in question, while the third can be from anywhere in the country.
An unconventional team and a secret mission
Lady K, the Chief of International Operations, is tasked with solving the mystery. Without clear guidance for her five departments, she must navigate the complexities of the case.
Along the way, readers meet Reece, a trainee surveyor working within the Borough Council, and Kelf, a plain-clothes detective with a problem-drinking habit who has been sent down from Newcastle. Together, they find themselves entangled in a web of historical intrigue and psychic phenomena.
The novel promises an engaging mix of thrills and humour as the characters attempt to unravel the secrets behind the mysterious photographs while preserving the integrity of British history.
