Aircraft down in Freshwater (Updated & Gallery)

Last updated:

A light aircraft has come down in a field at Tapnell Farm in Freshwater.

Two people were on board and have been taken to St Mary’s hospital in Newport.

The Island Fire service attended, but luckily there was no fire.

Our thoughts are with those involved.

Updated 20:46 Jake Priddle has just returned from the site of the downed plane for On the Wight.

He spoke to the Police Inspector at the scene and learnt that the plane had taken off from Wilmingham Lane, Freshwater on a private air strip. Due to engine trouble the Pilot, Kevin Atkins, had to perform an emergency landing.

The plane clipped the top of a hedge and was flipped over. The distance from where the plane took off, to where it landed is about 1.5Km.

Mr Atkins and his female passenger were taken away with minor injuries.

Air accident investigations have been notified.

Thanks to Jake Priddle (top shot and first three images in gallery) and Paul Blackley (remainder of images) for shots from the scene.

Lots of low flying aircraft over Bembridge at that time as well!

Looks a bit home-made? Not actually a proper aircraft. Still, glad they walked away.

This is a Microlight. They do seem to have a flimsy construction.
This is sad as it appears it has only recently been acquired.
