amey waste sorting

New waste contractor, Amey, starts on the Isle of Wight in two weeks

Island Waste have just 16 days left of their contract with the Isle of Wight council.

Starting on 1st November, a company called AmeyCespa – who work with 59 local authorities (40 of which relate to waste contracts) – will be responsible for waste collection on the Isle of Wight for the next 25 years.

The company were announced earlier during the summer as the preferred bidder from a shortlist for the whopping £225 million contract.

No change initially
There’s no need to panic about having to learn new rules for getting rid of your household waste, Amey assure us that everything will remain the same for the time being.

There’ll be some additional services from day one, including bulky waste collections for items such as furniture and white goods. Amey have teamed up with the Island charity, Storeroom 2010, who’ll collect up to four of unwanted items for £25 and putting them to good use.

There’ll also be roadside collections of Christmas trees (the real variety) between 7th January and 4th February if you book in advance.

No job losses
All staff will be transferred over to the new employer (so you can thank your waste teams at Christmas safe in the knowledge it’s they who’ve collected your rubbish all year).

You’ll start to see the waste sites and vehicles be rebranded with the agreed Isle of Wight Council and Amey logos.

Flexible contract
The Isle of Wight council gave an assurance that the contract is flexible enough to change and adapt over the next 25 years, as our waste needs change.

Some changes to waste collection – considered to be improvements – will be introduced next spring, details to follow nearer the time.

State-of-the-art treatment plant
As reported last month, Amey will be applying for planning permission and an Environmental Permit to renovate the Forest Road site.

This involves building a new, up-to-date mechanical treatment plant and refurbishing the existing advanced thermal treatment plant.

We’ll let you know once plans have been lodged.

One overdue welcome change would be notification of when (if?) the (Grade II Listed) wall at Frank James damaged by the departing contractor over two years ago will be repaired.

It is my understanding that the delay is caused by a failure by the owners to get this done. Island Waste have been waiting. They cannot order works to be done on property they don’t own. It would be nice to see the repairs done before the end of contract but unless the owner of the wall (previously Crown Estates) makes a request this can’t happen,

Thanks Luisa.

Please name and shame the present owners holding up the repair, and ask IW to just do it and repair their damage from over two years ago, as nobody is likely to object, are they? (And there is, of course, a duty to look after listed structures.)

Luisa. When will you admit the waste contract is going to be a disaster for the Island and that you did not take the opportunity on your appointment back in May 2013 to revisit how this contract was to be awarded ? There seems to be a conspiracy of silence about this contract.

Another change we apparently won’t notice is investment in Island (Powerhouse?) anaerobic digestion of our food waste for energy, instead of costly and inefficient transporting to Birmingham, Hampshire, or anywhere else off-island.

Or maximum efficiency from waste incineration delivering combined heat and power locally (ideally to neighbouring homes/businesses/pool & or spa?).

Something useful for our MP to help with, now the tiger is being taken care of?

So Island Waste can damage a wall they don’t own, but they cannot repair it? Peculiar.

Another paradox: Someone buys a listed building and they are not allowed to hit a nail in the wall. However, they are allowed to let it stand and rot for years without consequences.

It’s a topsy-turvy world…

I do so hope that AmeyCespa perform as good as the last gangs – They were excellent workers and very obliging.
I hope [AmeyCespa] have retained some of the old workers. Best wishes.

Don – read the article again – it clearly states that all staff will be transferred to the new contractor (which is normal TUPE contractual law)

So if there is a duty to look after listed structures, why isn’t this being done? The current Urgent Works at Frank James are thanks to CADO (Campaign Against Delinquent Ownership). Without their money nothing would have happened.

Why isn’t the building taken away from the owners? They have had it for over ten years and done naught. How can that be allowed???

Just wondering…

What exactly is it about this old hospital? The way many have rambled on about this building for years, you would think it was one of the seven wonders of the world?

“Some changes to waste collection – considered to be improvements ” Improvements for whom ?. Call me cynical (I do) but whenever these ‘PREFERRED BIDDERS’ change anything it is not for the benefit of the people. As for paying £25 for unwanted items to be collected, I would prefer to use Freecycle on the Wightbay website, it is FREE or there are plenty of other charities on… Read more »

To Einsteins Ghost: Come ad have a look for yourself at one of our monthly gatherings. The building is a gem. Moreover, not much new-build would have withstood the elements for so long without collapsing. This in itself is a wonder.

Apart from anything else it has character, which is a rarity today…

I think if we knew the full extent of the idiocy involved in handling our waste under the current arrangements, somebody at County Hall would have been strung up by now. Anaerobic digesters are usually built for a specific feedstock, but Arreton’s presumably can’t take food waste (or perhaps not enough capacity?). So where was the joined-up thinking that put together a long-term source of supply and… Read more »
