The first Anti-Bullying Conference for Young People is taking place at Newport’s Riverside Centre on Wednesday 22 October between 9am and 3pm.
Inform, enthuse and inspire
It is aimed at pupils in years 5 to 11 and is looking to inform, enthuse and inspire children and school staff to address bullying and cyber bullying in schools. It also aims to showcase and share good practices across the Island.
Partner agencies including Hampshire Police, The Children’s Society and Barnardos will give presentations, while Sandown Bay Academy, Medina College and Carisbrooke CE Primary will also be part of the agenda. The day will include interactive workshops and presentations.
Over 40 schools taking part
Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Executive member for children’s services, said:
“Over 40 schools will be attending on the day including the Isle of Wight Free School and Studio School, Medina House and St George’s and The Island Learning Centre.
“This is the first time an event such as this has been held on the Island and all spaces have been taken.
“It is very pleasing it has been so well supported, not only locally but also by partner agencies who work with the council and schools to crack down on all forms of bullying.”
Prize-giving
At the event, the winners of a recent poetry competition run by the council will receive their prizes. In the summer, a competition was run to write a new poem on anti-bullying, with over 240 entries.
There were winners in three age categories, with each one also invited to read their poems to the conference.
