Arresting Beauty book launch’: A peek into Victorian struggles, romance and ambition

The Isle of Wight literary world is abuzz with anticipation as local author, Heather Cooper, is set to launch her new historical romance novel, ‘Arresting Beauty’, at Dimbola Museum and Galleries.

The tale is an evocative retelling of the life of Mary Ryan, a young girl discovered begging on Putney Heath, only to be swept into the captivating world of Victorian photography.

A story told between two worlds
Mary’s journey begins when, at just ten years old, she’s found by the iconic Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron.

Soon, she finds herself straddling two contrasting worlds: the simple life of a servant girl and the enchanting realm of being an artistic assistant to Julia.

As she delves deeper into the bohemian high society of the time, Mary rubs shoulders with the likes of Tennyson and his circle.

Challenging the status quo
The novel delves into Mary’s brave fight against the class structures and societal attitudes prevalent during Victorian England.

As she navigates the challenges, Mary remains ever determined to pursue her personal aspirations, potentially finding love amidst the adversity.

Praise from the literary community
Joanne Owen, a critic from LoveReading, commended the novel saying,

“This reels with romance, period atmosphere, and the spirit of a young woman who teeters between her working-class roots and bohemian high society in Victorian England.”
