People looking at the Christmas Tree in Newport with the lights switched on - new

Bad weather forces cancellation of Newport’s Christmas celebration this Saturday (updated)

Last updated:

Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s ‘Day of Christmas’ event due to the bad weather that is forecast for this Saturday (18th November).

The decision was made by senior members of the Council following advice from staff who had been monitoring weather forecasts.

Garratt: Safety is always paramount
NCCC Chair Councillor Andrew Garratt said,

“We realise this will be very disappointing news, however safety is always paramount.

“The forecast suggests strong winds and rain which will make it difficult to run the event safely.

“The event will be back next year bigger than ever and hopefully will incorporate Newport Minster and The Quay which has proven popular in the past.”

Free skating sessions
SKATES will still be holding their free skating sessions for those who have prebooked.

NCCC would like to thank Mark and the team at SKATES for their continued support of the event.

Lights still coming on
Although there will not be an official switch on, residents can expect the lights to come on during the evening of Saturday 18th November.

It is anticipated that 64 High St will host a Christmas themed day including grotto and activities closer to Christmas.
