Becky Entwistle & Puzzle Muteson: Review

It has been nearly a year since I last saw Puzzle Muteson play at The Liquid Lounge.

Becky Entwhistle & Puzzle MutesonWith the little’un away and no need for a babysitter, when I saw that he was going to be playing alongside Becky Entwistle on Sunday night, despite feeling hugely exhausted after a brilliant wedding party on Saturday night (congratulations T&S), we managed to defeat the buttery hills of Ventnor and head up to the sparkling lights of Ryde.

Being a Sunday night, it was fairly quiet at the Liquid Lounge and as we arrived, the musicians were busy doing sound checks. There was time to grab a drink and have a chat before Becky took to the stage and quickly hypnotised us with her velvety voice.

She’s definitely more upbeat, but in my view, has hints of Mazzy Star (fan site) in there at certain times, which I hope she’ll take as a compliment rather than being pigeon-holed.

I love her lyrics and melodies, all delivered with an unassuming modesty. She recently supported Bestival Band Competition winners, Hugo Frusslinky and I’d definitely recommend heading over to her MySpace to listen to some of her tracks.

If you like what you hear, she’ll be playing at White Air on the 28th August (more details to follow soon) and at the Bestival Bandstand on 7th September.

Becky Entwistle & Puzzle MutesonAs soon as she’d finished, Puzzle Muteson slipped onto her seat and launched straight into his first track, creating a seamless continuum of wonderfully gentle Sunday evening music.

I bang on about Terry a lot on the Blog, simply because I consider him a very talented musician and singer. He’s developed a style that fits him perfectly and I could listen to his album over and over again without getting bored of it.

We were in for a surprise as he played several new tracks, I think we counted five plus the cover at the end.

As I mentioned yesterday, he’ll be playing at Quay Arts on 13th August as part of the Acoustic Originals and you can also catch him on the Bestival Bandstand on 7th September.
