Letter: Beware of utility scam

We always welcome a Letter to the Editor to share with readers. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch. This letter comes from from Daft Old Duffer. Ed

I have received a letter from a firm called ‘Checkprint Ltd’, enclosing a cheque for £100 and thanking me for using their services in changing my utilities supplier.

I have issued no instructions to anyone regarding switch of my supplier. The UNSIGNED letter is claimed to be from ‘Fund Raising Initiatives’.

Obvious scam
Clearly this is a scam and any response would, I believe, result in this firm taking it as my permission to act and in fact switch my supplier.

In such case I will not be given the choice of supplier to switch to, but rather this firm will transfer my account to the utility company offering them the best commission.

And I would end by paying out considerably more in increased bills in the future. Certainly more than the £100 cheque.

Return the cheque
I am returning the cheque to Checkprint.

I suggest anyone else receiving one should do the same.
