Big Wight: Cycling Festival This Weekend

Big Wight Bike FestivalWith the Walking Festival now out of the way, those with an active inclination will be pleased to hear that another festival starts this Saturday.

The Big Wight is the new name for the Wight Diamond Challenge/Festival which is held each year at Ninham Holiday Camp in Shanklin.

There are a number of rides you can take part in over the weekend, including the 100km endurance race and the Wight Diamond Navigator – which takes you all around the Island allowing you to choose your route.

Single Track, the Mountain Bike Magazine have some lovely things to say about the Island.

“The Isle of Wight is one of the best kept secrets in UK mountain biking. At just 13miles from southern to northern tip and 23 miles east to west, the amount of great trails on offer is just staggering.

The Island boasts over 250 miles of legally rideable trails and takes great care to signpost and maintain them. The southern and eastern downs of the Island are the best playgrounds, a relentless series of muscular hills criss-crossed with an enviable variety of trails; rooty woodland singletrack, scorching descents, gasping climbs and skyline ridge rides.”

But if you live or visit regularly, you’ll know all that already.

As well as the cycling, there will be music to entertain and plenty of great grub for the hungry participants.

Check out the website for more info on how to register etc. It looks like a fantastic event and suitable for all the family as well as serious cyclists.
