More than nine out of every ten motorcyclists injured in collisions on the Isle of Wight are from the Island itself.
That’s the finding of figures released by police ahead of a motorcycling road safety course being set up in May to help reduce the number of casualties.
The statistics
Over the last five years, 400 riders have been injured in collisions, of whom 368 live on the Isle of Wight.
In 2011 there were 34 motorcyclist casualties which is an increase on the average number for the previous four years (25).
BikeSafe event in May
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing unit are holding a BikeSafe event on Sunday, May 13, at Ryde fire station.
Sergeant Gabe Snuggs, the force’s BikeSafe co-ordinator, said: “BikeSafe is a nationwide police-led initiative that aims to improve riders’ confidence on the road and ultimately help save lives.
“We look at things like riders’ attitudes on the roads, their motivations and how to respond to other road users.
“It’s fair to say that many riders can get complacent about those routes they’re more familiar with and are prepared to take risks they otherwise wouldn’t which makes them more likely to be injured.
“The Isle of Wight is no different in this respect and if we can provide riders with the hints and tip they need to better assess the risks, then hopefully we can reduce the number who are being injured on our roads.”
