Bringing you more bizarre stories related to the Isle of Wight … this one caught my eye.
But it’s the Isle of Wight County in the U S of A.
Bill Taliaferro and his brothers at Montague Farms Inc. (don’t forget the inc ;-)) grow natto beans which ‘smell slightly rotten’ and taste like strong cheese.
The Japanese go bonkers for this bean which we’re told to “think of pork and beans, drained, and add clear glue.â€?
If you think that sounds good, wait for this …
“The bacteria develops a clear mucus. When you eat them with chop sticks, they stick together.
Sounds like a strange buisness to be in, but its creating work for over 100 farmers in the county and hiring more employees.
The company shipped more than 10,000 tons of the beans last year, so Montague Farms is expanding its operation into Isle of Wight County. On 32 acres north of Windsor, by the fall — and just in time for the soybean harvest — the company will open a processing and export facility. It will more than double Montague’s capacity to export the beans to Japan.
Can’t say I’ve ever come across this bean before and somehow don’t think I’ll be searching it out on the Isle of Wight.
If you can be bothered, you can read the full story here.
