Blackgang Car Park Sale: Key Players Not Contacted

Neither Chale Parish council or even the family who have operated the ice cream van for the last fourteen years at the Blackgang viewpoint car park have been contacted by the Isle of Wight Council about the potential sale of the land, VentnorBlog has learned.

Uncle Sam's ice cream vanAs VB found out on Wednesday, the council is “in negotiation with (a) special purchaser”, exploring selling the much-loved viewpoint.

No contact with Uncle Sam
The Dyers of Chale Farm, who make their own ice-cream to sell from the “Uncle Sam’s” van, told VB that they have a contract with the council to sell from the view point, despite this they hadn’t been made aware of the possible sale by the council.

Mr Dyer said he thought that it was an awful shame if it were to be lost as it was an important view, but added that the purchaser might well have good intentions.

Yet again, bad manners and thorough arrogance displayed by the council.

There is sufficient business to warrant an ice-cream van because of the volume of people arriving by car who use this car park, not just as a view point in it’s own right, but also as a principle setting off point for ramblers and for people who want to make their way up above St Catherine’s Oratory and enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Island. How can… Read more »

Because of its value, which you have just described.
The ‘special purchaser’ might be a dodgy deal. How can they do this without opening it up to other bidders ?

No surprises here: did anyone seriously expect any consultation from this arrogant lot? There is only one answer for the Island’s residents: kick them out at the next opportunity!

let’s hope (if that’s the pertinent sentiment) that when all is sold off and they don’t survive…it all comes together at the elections next year…. What we need to be doing now, is to keep a record of ALL of the actions that this administration are taking, including the offhand way they deal with the public, the electorate, the media AND those elected with different political persuasion… Read more »

so what is the asking price for the carpark and can the people of the island raise the cash to buy it to preserve it for the people of the island

It truly makes me weep to see our assets, treasures and wonders being sold off one by one. With no credible opposition to support, therefore enabling us to remove the current administration, and with no one in authority being held to account for their actions, it is a despondent and bleak future we face. The council know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Conservativism:
A political orientation advocating the preservation of the best in society and opposing radical changes, the habit of mind; or conduct, of a conservative.

Based on this in which category would you put our local Council?

Ice cream van owner emerges as ‘Key Player’ in Council car park sell off.

I think you may have overdone that one!

Ok, they maybe should have contacted the Parish Council, I don’t know, but to have a headline proclaiming that key players hadn’t been contacted and it turns out that one is an ice cream van operator is perhaps stretching things a bit far!

I disagree, the concessionaire is a key player due to the fact that they’ve had a van there for many years. If change of ownership is planned for the car park they should have been informed. Simple as.

Before everyone goes off on the usual ‘kick the Council’ theme, might it not be better to wait and see who the ‘special purchaser’ actually is? Aren’t we jumping the gun a bit here? Would anyone complain if it were the National Trust, for instance? I would say that they might be better custodians than than the Council. Why not wait until the facts emerge before we… Read more »

Think you may have the wrong name, Democrat – Democracy is all about the acceptance of differing views, what gives you the right to declare what is common sense? That sounds more ‘Authoritarian”.

Amanda. Why don’t you read what Cath said before rushing to condemn her? All she is saying is that before going off on one you should establish the real facts. Typical of those who persist on this Blog with insults are to be found on this thread and who can be relied on to come up with negative comments without any justification. We have on this thread use… Read more »

Cath:

1. In the Council’s original response you will see: “…this potential can only be realised with the benefit of private sector investment.” Therefore, sadly, we are not talking about the National Trust.

2. I think you’ll find that investigative journalism is not normally based on the premise of “let’s wait and see”. It’s based on asking questions and trying to get answers.

The council havnt even made a decision yet, and already people are talking about selling off assets, treasures and wonders. anyone would think its stonehenge or the london eye. its a car park, not a wonder or a treasure. I agree completely with Cath, this is something thats been sensationalised just a little. It also may well encourage council bashing comments. People are slagging off the council… Read more »

I’ve seen the light Cath and democracy, what is snide, underhand, arrogant, and idiotic about not telling a sitting tennant that you plan to sell his place of business from under them. Also what right have we, as the real owners of the view point got to know who they are selling it to? We are not intellegent to understand the proposal, and we would only block the… Read more »

To ‘Democrat’ and ‘Cath’: Every media outlet, newspaper and forum has its own style and objectives. It will reflect, attract and indeed be sustained by those who share their vision. The vast majority of bloggers here clearly have no time for the council. Why? The current administration has shown nothing but contempt and arrogance for the electorate. They vote on mass with little or no debate (I’ve… Read more »

For me this is not about the car park or the method – those are just indicative of the attitude of an administration that’s been in power too long. It’s a phenomenon that taints any and all administrations when they have been in power too long – it’s an arrogance that allows them – both elected members and officers – to believe in their own infallibility and… Read more »
