Brading Oil Spill: Southern Vectis UpdateRoutes 2 and 3 are subject to significant disruption following the emergency closure of Brading High Street.

Customers are advised where possible to use Islandline trains between Ryde – Brading – Sandown – Lake – Shanklin, who are accepting Southern Vectis tickets and passes for travel while the road closure remains in place.

UPDATE from Southern Vectis: Our investigations indicate that one of our new Scania double deckers suffered a rupture to its fuel tank while crossing an unsecured metal plate covering roadworks in Brading. We subsequently estimate that the vehicle lost around 130 litres of diesel between Brading and Shanklin Somerfield.

Our driver became aware of the problem at Shanklin Somerfield and immediately halted his vehicle, making contact with our Inspector. Our staff immediately alerted the relevant authorities to the problem.

Police closed a number of affected roads in the area and IW Council Highways have treated the affected areas. Our staff have been on site throughout and our vehicle is currently being recovered from the Shanklin for assesment and repair.

As a result of the closure of Brading, where we understand a lorry suffered similarly, but dropped a much larger amount of fuel over a shorter distance, our routes 2 and 3 are severely disrupted.

Customers travelling within the Ryde to Shanklin corridor are advised where possible to use Island Line trains, who are accepting Southern Vectis tickets and passes during the closure.
