Let’s hear it for Newport!
As you know, we were running at less than half speed last week (we were supposed to be running at zero speed, but managed to get sucked back in towards the end of the week).
While we were trying to not work(!), some clever things released the Welsh version of Jay-Z’s New York State of Mind – called Ymerodraeth State of Mind. That’s Newport to you and I.
You’ll never guess what. It’s only had over 1.3 million views!
Adam Inker was very quick on the draw last week putting it up on the ‘Get JayZ to sing “Newport” instead of “New York” at Isle of Wight Festival‘ Facebook group (1,000+ members).
The lyrics are brilliant and the video has more than a touch of professionalism about it – top stuff all round.
Here’s a few snippets …
“Newport!
Concrete jumble, nothing in order
Not far from the border
When you’re in Newport”
After touching on working at the DVLA in Swansea (“too far away”), they launch into …
“so look me up on Google – I’m seven pages in
Was in the local paper, Mam threw it in the bin!
She didn’t see the article calling me a rap star
Ripped it into pieces and used it for the hamster.”
and later …
“Twinned with Guangxi Province in China
… there’s no province finer.
Josie D’Arcy’s from Newport
Yes, it’s strange, we didn’t know either …
… Thank you Wikipedia.”

Once you start looking for other versions of this, you find a fairly rich seam.
This one’s back from April. Two girls knocking out a live version of living in Newport, Wales. Spar features big time.
There’s a few sourced from the US too …
Newark State of Mind
Guess they’re not big fans
New Jersey’s version
