Bursary Opportunity For Budding Marine Engineers At UKSAThis October, one student on the Professional Yacht Engineer course at maritime training establishment UKSA will have the opportunity to apply for a bursary to help fund their studies.

The Shipwrights Ark Bursary of £2000 will be allocated to one deserving student who otherwise may not have been able to attend the professional career training course at UKSA on the Isle of Wight.

Jon Ely, Chief Executive at UKSA, commented: “The Shipwrights Ark Bursary will help give one deserving student a unique opportunity to study to the very highest level and gain the practical experience necessary for a successful career as a marine engineer. We are proud to be able to offer opportunities like these to deserving candidates, and look forward to working closely with them to help them achieve their career goals.”

The Shipwrights Company is 59th in the order of seniority of the 108 livery companies of the City of London. One of the larger companies, it has over 400 liverymen and 250 freemen, whose qualification for admission is a professional maritime background. The Charitable Fund makes grants to maritime charities and to youth organisations, and provides bursaries to help young people undertake sail training voyages.

The Tory representatives from Shanklin are dreaming. They pushed through the closure of Shanklin Fire Station before the new Bay area Station has even got a site let alone planning permission and neither of them will confirm that the Bay station is even going to be built. The Tory councillors are not representing the people of Shanklin…they are puting their lives and property at risk. Williams and… Read more »

Barry Abrahams is no more than a David Pugh puppet. Nothing could happen at the council without the behind the scenes agreement of Pugh and Brown. It seems obvious to me that Abrahams is the fall guy for this evident nonsense. I once sat and watched Councilor Abrahams in a full council meeting read every word of a speech on fire service change. He was nervous, I… Read more »

I am completely in favour of the Bay Area station with retained Fireman……but to close Shanklin before its building is even agreed borders on the criminal incompetence

Cllr Abraham responded, “Hopefully when people are back from holiday.” Are you seriously telling me that something as important as a fire station depends on when unspecified people get back from holiday? Cllr Abraham, WHO are these people you refer to, and WHY cant a decision be made without them? Surely the council hasnt been so incompetent as to allow all its councillors to take the same… Read more »

Can you get an internet/email petition going as well?
This would reach beyond IOW and garner support (pressure) worldwide.

Why not? If OneWight can gather signatures from holidaymakers to keep one MP on the Island, then why not get signatures from those visiting or staying in Shanklin who are also concerned about their safety.

The fire station could be the first of many cuts in Shanklin, so as the people of Shanklin we must all start thinking for shanklin before anything else, we all love to live in Shanklin as we feel that there is nowhere better to liv. So when we hear of any cuts planned that will affect, hurt and ultimately ruin Shanklin followed closely by the terms ”For… Read more »

Police Station is next….the ‘temporary’ closure is just a test run.

We should all make an effort to attend the police Station to report every little offense (litter, dog fowling etc)

If councillor Abrahams and the conservative party on the Isle of Wight think that the people of Shanklin, uniting in this way to show their outright opposition against the closure of their fire station and their absolute desire to keep their fire station open, makes ‘’no difference to their decision’’ then I believe the party has sunk to a new low. Maybe they need reminding that 6000… Read more »

As an exmember of Shanklin fire station i am very upset to hear of the intended closure of this well respected station.Being a member of the Whiteheads Creek fire brigade which has just had the official opening of it’s new fire station it must be remembered that the number one aim of any fire brigade is to save life, money comes second!
