Car plunge leads to 2.30am Coastguard helicopter search

Residents in Ventnor were woken in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) as the Coastguard helicopter circled around the Whitwell Road and Steephill area.

The Coastguard had been called to assist after a car came off the road and plunged down a steep embankment on the junction of Gills Cliff Road and Whitwell Road.

The incident took place at 12.30am and residents in Whitwell Road told OnTheWight

“We heard the skidding followed by the crump of the crash.”

Driver fled
The driver fled from the scene and the Coastguard helicopter assisted in searching the area for them.

Police say the driver was not found, but the search concluded they were no longer in the area.

Police also confirm the car was not being pursued before it came off the road.

Minor injuries
The passenger in the car, who had minor injuries, was helped from the vehicle.

Police confirm to OnTheWight that investigations are ongoing.
