Two concerts in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice are being held in the South of the Island next week.
At 7.30pm on Thursday 9th August ‘Cellists of the Future’ will be playing cello and piano music at St. Lawrence Parish Church and on Saturday 11th at 7.30pm a ‘Cello Feast’ of music for cello ensembles will be on offer at St. Boniface Church, Bonchurch.
Talented young cellists from as far afield as Aberdeen, Cambridge and London will be performing during their cello summer school with Bonchurch cellist, James Halsey.
‘Cellists of the Future’
Megan Rolf, 16, from Aberdeen, national finalist in Rotary Young Musician of the Year, Tom Nicoll, who gained the highest mark nationally in an Associated Board exam for his grade 8 last year when he was only 11, Linden Ralph, from the Royal College of Music Juniors, Charlotte Walker, 14, from Wells Cathedral School and Tori Nicoll, who studies at Chethams Specialist Music School, will be playing with Island pianist Sally Halsey in St Lawrence on Thursday 9th August.
They will perform a variety of music from Elgar to Dvorak, Haydn to Cassado.
‘Cello Feast’
Cellists will be presenting a feast of entertaining cello ensemble music in Bonchurch on Saturday 11th August, exploiting the great range and mellow, rich tones a group of cellos can produce.
The cello is one of the few instruments which has a sufficient range to cover each part and James is very enthusiastic about music for multi-cellos.
These superb young players can’t fail to enthral and inspire with well-known pieces such as Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite, and Bare Necessities from the Jungle Book, coupled with James’ interesting introductions.
Both concerts will have interval refreshments available and a retiring collection for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
