The campaign to introduce changing places toilets on the Island hits a high note today, as the first is officially opened in Newport.
Thanks to a grant of £10,000 from the Isle o Wight council, the new facility for severely disabled children and adults opens at the Riverside Centre today.
The facility features a powered hoist, centrally located toilet pan, height adjustable changing table, grab rails and alarm system.
Richard Priest, Manager of the Riverside Centre said: “I knew the council were looking for suitable sites to locate a specialist disabled toilet facility and suggested that two adjacent accessible toilets in the Riverside Centre could be combined to create one large high dependency unit.”
Growing number of Changing Places toilets
We understand that out of the 132 Changing Places approved toilets in the country, the Riverside facility is one of only four on the South coast.
Cllr Dawn Cousins, Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “We are pleased to be able to provide this valuable service to severely disabled people and their carers. We have built the facility to criteria outlined by Changing Places, so we know it meets the highest standards and will be welcomed by those requiring such a facility.”
