A tremendous, unbeaten innings of 92 from James Cheek led Ventnor to a comprehensive seven wicket win over Hambledon in the Southern Electric Premier League at Newclose on Saturday.
The 17 year old, opening the innings, struck ten fours in a highly impressive knock and in tandem with Cole McConchie who hit a fine 86, made light work of chasing down a target of 211. The pair added 166 for the second wicket with New Zealander McConchie hammering fifteen boundaries before departing to leave Cheek to complete the formalities.
Injury a problem for Miller
Earlier in the day, Roger Miller, returning after a month out with a damaged hamstring, took two early wickets before pulling up with a recurrence of the same injury. Despite this set back, Adam Wilson, Mark Holmes, McConchie and Division 2 Cricketer of the month Adam Hose continued to chip away before a determined innings of 77 from Australian David Williams saw Hambledon recover from 127-6 to post 210-9 from their 50 overs.
This latest victory means Ventnor have a 30 point advantage over Rowledge at the top of the table ahead of Saturday’s visit to Bournemouth II.
More away-day blues for Ventnor
Ventnor’s second team slumped to their fourth defeat of the season on Saturday, decisively beaten at Hungerford by nine wickets in their Hampshire League division 2 clash.
Another poor batting display saw the Islanders dismissed for only 110 inside 32 overs with only Billy Clarke (36) and Hugh Calloway providing any real resistance.
The home side required fewer than 16 overs to score the required runs, Spencer Annetts hitting 68 not out.
With the side currently in mid-table, a victory over Old Basing at Steephill on Saturday is essential to re-ignite their season.
Putney defeated in memorial game
Sunday’s annual fixture in memory of former Ventnor President Maurice Lickens ended in a 75 run win for Ventnor over Putney at Steephill.
Ben Woodhouse (70) and Hugh Calloway (78) impressed in Ventnor’s total of 266-5, a total beyond the visitors who replied with 191.
