Classes and Workshop at Quay Arts - WatercolourThe new season, September-December 08, at Quay Arts is packed with classes and activities for all ages and abilities.

If you have ever wanted to have a go at life drawing, theatre skills, watercolour, bookmaking, jewellery, fused glass, enamelling, printmaking, pottery or even precious metal clay, now is your chance!

Children are also catered for with Dancing Tots for pre-schoolers on Mondays, weekly Clay sessions, Family Pottery on Saturdays and regular Drama Workshops with Red Tie theatre. Back by popular demand is another series of Kids’ Art in the Galleries on Saturday mornings – these will again be led by different artists each week and are based on Quay Arts’ current exhibition programme.

They will be using fun and imaginative themes to encourage children to explore what they see in the galleries, and to produce their own creation to take home. During October Big Draw will be celebrated for the whole month with two FREE sessions for children on Saturdays (see below for further details).

Kids’ Workshops
Drama Workshops @ Quay Arts

Starting Sat 6 Sep for 12 weeks
Age 13 – 19 years: 10am – 12pm and Age 9 – 12 years: 1 – 3pm £35 per term

These courses are aimed at young people who are looking to create their own drama performances and develop their acting skills. Build your self-confidence and have fun learning acting and performing skills such as team building, expression, ensemble work, script work and devising theatre, movement, voice work, and physical theatre. Red Tie Theatre, run by Helen Reading, aims to support the education of young people whilst encouraging creativity and self-expression through drama.

Red Tie Theatre is able to support the work of students studying for GCSE Drama and A-Level Theatre Studies.

Dancing Tots @ Quay Arts (age 18 months to 5 years)
Mondays 15 Sep – 20 Oct & 3 Nov – 8 Dec (12 weeks) 9:45 – 10:30am and 10:45 – 11:30am £15 per 6 week block
Two lively movement classes for pre-school boys and girls. Parent / carers must accompany children and are encouraged to join in.

Kids’ Clay @ Jubilee Stores (age 8 years +)
Tuesdays 16 Sep – 25 Nov excl. 28 Oct (10 weeks) 4 – 5:30pm £55 / £50
This course with Sue Przygonski introduces children to the pleasures of working with clay, including throwing, sculpting and decorating as well as the safe use of equipment and tools. Old shirt or overall essential.

Kids’ Art in the Galleries @ Quay Arts (age 8 years +)

A different artist-led workshop every week, based on Quay Arts’ current exhibition programme. We will be using fun and imaginative themes to encourage children to explore what they see in the galleries, and to produce their own creation to take home.

Mural Workshop (age 8 years +)

By popular demand! A whole day to create a mural on the wall of the Learning Curve Gallery, experimenting with projectors, found objects and a vast array of objects and materials to create a public work that will rock the Quay! All materials provided.

Life Drawing @ Quay Arts

Mondays 8 Sep – 1 Dec excl. 27 Oct (12 weeks) 1 – 3pm & 3:30 – 5:30pm

Tutor Roger Butler encourages students to develop an intuitive approach to drawing from the life model. He advises on techniques and materials with an emphasis on experimentation, exploration and improvisation. New members are very welcome to these popular classes, which are suitable for all levels of experience. Please bring drawing materials and paper.

Theatre Skills Workshops for Adults @ Quay Arts
Course 1: Devising Theatre

Mondays 29 Sep – 20 Oct 7- 9pm £30 per course or £45 for both
Learn how to create your own drama performances through improvisation and devising techniques, ensemble work and characterisation.

Course 2: Looking at Scripts

The Big Draw: Experimental Drawing Workshop @ Quay Arts, Learning Curve Gallery
Thu 16 Oct 10am – 4pm £35 / £30
Explore and experiment with your eyes, hands, elbows and feet to create drawings and images that are truly inimitable. Artist Christopher Jenkins will encourage participants to liberate their drawings whilst developing draftsmanship – a great opportunity to expand your portfolio. Please bring a sketchbook and any implements or surfaces you enjoy using. Charcoal and paper will be provided.

Moving On in Watercolour @ Jubilee Stores
Sat 15 & Sun 16 Nov 9:30am – 3:30pm £75 / £70
This weekend course with Frank Jacobs has been designed for people who have mastered the basic principles of watercolour painting but who are ready to move on. As far as possible the content will be planned to meet the individual needs of the participants and will also cover such fundamental topics as basic technique, tone, colour, composition and the use of sketchbooks. Please bring your own paints, equipment and paper – a suggested list is available from Box Office.

Printmaking @Jubilee Stores
Expressive Handmade Books

Create books that express your own thoughts and stories, using a variety of handbound structures with printmaker / book artist Ros Williams. Suitable for all levels of experience. Booking essential.

Open Access Printmaking
Sundays 7 Sep / 5 Oct / 9 Nov / 30 Nov 11am – 5pm £95 / £90 for 4 sessions or £25 per day
Spend a full day working in the Printmaking Studio, with plenty of time to develop your own work and experiment with different processes. The studio has facilities for screenprinting, etching, drypoint, monotype, collagraph, lino and woodcut. Ros Williams, an artist with 25 years experience of printmaking, provides advice and assistance. Suitable for all levels of experience. Booking essential.

A new course aimed at people who are interested in learning about printmaking techniques from scratch. Printmakers Ian Whitmore and Ros Williams will introduce you to the apparatus and tools of the printmaking process, the various paper types that can be used and guide you in designing and producing your own multiple prints. Printing 1-2-3 is a framework of units that allows you to explore printmaking under expert guidance. It will show you how easy and satisfying it is to mark-make and create your own individual prints. You can attend any individual unit, or all three at the reduced price.

Handmade Cards and Gift Tags
Sat 29 Nov 10am – 2:30pm £25 / £20
Design and print personalised greetings cards and gift tags with traditional wooden type, rubber stamps, vintage letterpress blocks and simple printmaking techniques. This workshop is suitable for all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Jewellery Studio @ Jubilee Stores
This autumn we have introduced a wider range of courses in our Jewellery Studio to meet the demand from our enthusiastic students! We now have a small jewellery kiln so that we are able to add enamelling and precious metal clay to our repertoire. After completing any of the courses below, students will be able to continue working on their own projects in our Wednesday evening Open Access sessions. All tools are provided and materials are included in the course fee (except for Open Access). Please note that advance booking is essential as places are limited to 9 per workshop.

Practical Jewellery Design
Tuesdays 16 Sep – 11 Nov excl. 28 Oct (8 weeks) 7 – 9pm £130 / £120
Learn how to design and make a brooch or pendant in silver with jeweller Sophie Honeybourne. Fretwork uses techniques such as piercing/sawing, surface treatment, riveting and layering, which can be easily repeated at home. Students are encouraged to bring in other materials such as vintage fabric, perspex or wood, which can be incorporated in to their design. Suitable for all levels – more advanced students will have the opportunity to develop their design into a neckpiece.

Introduction to Silver Jewellery
Thursdays 18 Sep – 27 Nov excl. 30 Oct (10 weeks) 6:30 – 8:30pm £150 / £140
In this course with Nina Bulley students will be working with sterling silver and will start by making a simple ring and a bangle, before moving onto designing and making items of their own. Techniques involved will include using a saw, hammering, bending & shaping silver, drilling, soldering, and polishing. This course is suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience.

Jewellery Open Access
Wednesdays 24 Sep – 3 Dec excl. 29 Oct (10 weeks) 7 – 9pm £95 / £90 per term or £12 per session
These drop-in sessions are for students with basic skills who have already attended jewellery workshops at Jubilee Stores. Students will be able to work at their own pace on their own projects, with help on hand from jeweller Kelly Yates. Please note that the sessions are not suitable for absolute beginners, who may wish to attend a Taster Day or weekend course before tackling individual projects. Tools and equipment are provided, but students will need to bring their own materials, although a small amount of silver will be in stock to purchase. A list of suppliers is available from the Jewellery Studio or from Box Office. People who do not wish to book in advance are advised to ring Box Office on the day to check availability.

Jewellery Taster Day
Sat 27 Sep 10am – 4pm £50 / £45 per day
This one-day workshop with Sophie Honeybourne is a great introduction to the pleasure of making your own jewellery in sterling silver. You will learn how to make a silver bangle (worth around £40) by bending and shaping the wire. Techniques involved are using a saw, pliers to shape the metal, hammering, filing and polishing. The workshop allows students to ‘taste’ this subject before committing to a longer course. Suitable for beginners.

Introduction to Precious Metal Clay
Sat 11 & Sun 12 Oct 10am – 4pm £95 / £90
Precious metal clay is an exciting mixture of silver powder, water and organic binder. It has a consistency like clay, but when fired the water and clay burn off, leaving your creation with its original shape and texture. Over this introductory weekend with Kelly Yates you will learn all the basics of handling silver clay, including shaping and forming, decorating and firing and have the opportunity to make a ring and a pendant. Suitable for beginners.

Fused Glass Weekend
Sat 18 & Sun 19 Oct 10am – 4pm £95 / £90
Learn how to make your own jewellery using recycled and specialist glass with Nina Bulley. Students will learn how to cut and shape the glass. We will be using copper, gold leaf and a small amount of dichroic glass to emphasise the designs which we will make into pendants and earrings. We will fire all the pieces in a kiln and have plenty of time to experiment and use students’ own ideas. No experience is necessary.

Enamelling Weekend
Sat 1 & Sun 2 Nov 10am – 4pm £95 / £90
Discover the basics of the jewellery enamelling process with Nina Bulley. Students will learn how to cut and prepare shapes from sheet copper and use enamelling powders and lump enamel to decorate the metal. We will be using a small kiln to fire our pieces. After some experimentation students will be able to design and make a final piece of jewellery from silver. Suitable for beginners and anyone interested in learning about the basic enamelling process.

Cufflink Workshop
Sat 6 & Sun 7 Dec 10am – 4pm £95 / £90
In this two day course with Kelly Yates you will have the opportunity to make a pair of silver cufflinks from precious metal clay – an ideal present for yourself or for someone’s Christmas stocking! You will learn how to shape and form the silver clay into your chosen design and explore various texturing techniques to enable you to create something truly original. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have worked with PMC before.

The Pottery Studio @ Jubilee Stores
The Pottery is a large, open-plan, well-equipped facility containing a variety of potter’s wheels and both gas and electric kilns. Please note that all our classes include materials and firings in the course fee.

Drop-In Pottery Sessions
Wednesdays 10 Sep – 3 Dec excl. 29 Oct (12 weeks) 10am – 12:30pm £12.50 per session or £130 / £120 for whole course
First Wednesday of every month will be a whole-day session
10am – 4pm @ £22.50 (starts 10 Sep)

This class is open to all, beginners or those with some experience who prefer to work at their own pace. Motivation and guidance is provided by potter Sue Paraskeva, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Thursdays 11 Sep – 4 Dec excl. 30 Oct (12 weeks) 7 – 9pm £10 per session or £105 / £100 for whole course
A new two hour evening slot with Clair Robinson, for people who can’t get to our popular morning sessions. It is suitable for beginners and classes are paced at each individual’s requirements. More experienced potters can come along and work at their own pace, with professional input as needed.

Family Session
Saturdays 13 Sep – 6 Dec excl. 1 Nov (12 weeks) 10am – 12:30pm
£12.50 adults / £7.50 children (age 8 years +) per session or £130 / £120 for whole course (adults)

Learn to throw pots on the wheel and handbuild to your own designs, using a variety of clays. Tutors Dawn Campbell or Clair Robinson will be on hand to give you any help or advice you may require getting you started. Parents are welcome to attend with their children (8 years+) at this session, which is open to all abilities.
