A strong team from Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club travelled to Swanage for the Association run Swanage Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta on Saturday (25th June) knowing that it would difficult to repeat the previous week’s strong performance of four Championship wins at Newport Regatta – and so it proved.
Second place for Dale
The best performance of the day probably came from Coastal Junior Sculler Dale Buckett who finished second in his final – just behind the Association Champion from BTC.
The Ladies Coastal Junior Four of Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Emily Pike and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing also produced a strong performance to finish second in their final in only their fourth race at this status following their promotion earlier in the season – and it was an encouraging fifth place in the same final for the newly promoted Ladies Coastal Junior B Crew of Abi Locke, Julie Cole, Karen Crook and Kate Whitehurst with Dale Buckett coxing.
Closely contested races
Following their impressive win the previous week at Newport the Men’s senior Four of Joe Evans-Murray, Henry Gove, Ollie Gove and Adam Edwards, coxed by Becca Nigh were a little off the pace, finishing in fifth place in a very close race. Earlier Joe Evans-Murry had competed in the Men’s Senior Sculls event finishing in fourth place in another closely contested race.
The Coastal Junior Pair of Joel Smith and James Smith – who are improving – each week finished in fourth place in their final. Both of them also competed in the Men’s Novice Sculls event but failed to make the final.
The Club J14 Coxed Four of Freya Drage, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Austin Smith and Cox Eirann McClumpha did exceptionally well to finish in fifth place in the J16 Coxed Fours event – racing against crews that were two years Senior to them.
Master 50 Coxed Fours
The one win in the day came from Micky Jenner – competing in a composite four with BTC who won the Master 50 Coxed Fours event.
To conclude the Regatta a mixed fours race was staged with a Ryde crew of Abi Locke, Julie Cole and Henry and Ollie Gove with Austin Smith coxing finishing in fifth place.
