Community council commemorate Valentine Gray with poignant Valentine’s Day gathering

A poignant gathering was held in Church Litten on Valentine’s Day to remember ‘The Little Sweep’ Valentine Gray.  Valentine died aged nine at the hands of his master, Benjamin Davies in 1822.

Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council recently added wording to the Valentine Gray monument in Church Litten to show he is still remembered by the residents of Newport and Carisbrooke.

Councillor Julie Jones-Evans said,

“To see this new inscription 200 years on from Valentine’s death is very moving, his life isn’t forgotten.

“The monument was raised by penny subscriptions by the people of Newport – think Georgian crowd funding – NCCC is funded by our local residents so it’s apt that we could do this commemorative addition.

“2022 was our Year of The Child and it was a great success working alongside the Youth Trust and local historians. Thank you to everyone who contributed.”
