Community Spirit Alive And Well In NewportNewport Parish Council are delighted to report that community spirit is alive and well in the business community of Newport, even in these difficult economic times.

Fairlee Trees generously donated three trees to Carisbrooke as well as the tree in St James Square in Newport. When Mark Saker, the manager of the Carisbrooke branch of the Southern Co-Operative, heard that new lights had to be purchased for a number of trees, he
contacted his regional office and arranged for a donation of £100 towards the cost.

Now the trees in the grounds of the Medical Centre and the Church Hall have brand new low cost lights. Mr Saker said ‘We are always willing to help the community in any way we can. The branch has a number of community project ideas in the pipeline and we look forward to working with the parish council and other groups next year’.

Members of St Mary’s Church expressed their gratitude for a tree inside the Church and this has been dressed by volunteers, who have also dressed the tree outside the Church Hall in the High Street.

Gunville Community Association has as usual dressed their donated tree in the grounds of the Methodist Church. The Chairman of the Parish Council, Peter Whiteman, said ‘Often the outlying areas of the parish get forgotten, so it was a pleasure to be able to do something for Carisbrooke with the help of the community. The Parish Council hopes we can extend the number of trees to other wards in future years.’
