Womble Wendy, aka Ventnor’s Wendy Marshall, shares this latest report from the Vectis Wombles Group. In her own words.
The Medina Estuary was brought to Vectis Wombles attention through Womble Adrian, who had seen a plea from Womble Susan Jane. There was so much rubbish to clear up, could Vectis Wombles as a group help?
So a recce of the area took place. As the land is private, contact had to be made with Isle of Wight council to arrange for collection of the rubbish.
IW Wombles in action
A date was set and word sent out. Sunday, 12th March at 10am saw Vectis Wombles from Cowes, Newport, Niton, Rookley, Sandown, Ventnor and Whitwell arrive with their litter picking equipment and tidy bags.
Some Vectis Wombles had met each other before and others met for the first time. In all, about 20 Vectis Wombles and four dogs answered the call.
Dry, bright but windy weather
The weather was on our side, dry, bright but windy. And so the tidy up began.
Along with the usual debris found, other items included a tent, clothing, carpet, road cone, large bits of plastic, lots of cotton bud sticks and eight syringes.
Womble Wends has a syringe box and took the syringes.
Finished by midday
We called time at midday, collected everything together and placed the pile of tidy bags etc. where we had informed IWC they would be left for collection.
Wow, what a great tidy up. We posed for some group pics and then departed back to our burrows across the Island.
More Wombles
Womble Lin arrived as we finished, but would go along the path towards Newport where she met Womble Tiggy Tigg coming in the opposite direction.
Womble Lin has confirmed on her return to Island Harbour, that the IWC Contractor had been and collected our pile of full tidy bags etc.
Thank you to all the Vectis Wombles that tided up. Enjoy the pics. Regards, Womble Wends.
