New steps leading down to the beach at Compton Bay have opened in time for the summer.
The new wooden steps and landings replace the old ones that were eroding due to coastal wear and tear and may not have lasted the holiday season.
The Isle of Wight Council’s Public Rights of Way department led the project which was funded by an Access for All grant provided by the Isle of Wight National Landscape (IWNL), formerly Isle of Wight AONB Partnership.
The stairs provide safe access to one of the Island’s most popular beaches which is enjoyed by many residents and visitors all year round.
Partnership collaboration
The council worked in partnership with the IWNL, the National Trust (landowner) and Natural England and attention will now turn to repairing other beach accesses, such as Brook, Chilton Chine and Orchard Bay, in the coming weeks.
