Cost Of School Meals On The Wight Being Reduced

Cost Of School Meals On The Wight Being ReducedGood news for parents who pay for their children’s school dinners.

In response to the difficult times that many of us are facing with the economic downturn and thanks to a government grant (School Meals Standard Funds grant), the Isle of Wight Council has been able to lower the cost of school meals at primary and secondary schools and say that they will keep these prices in place until September 2010.

Starting from the start of the next half term (23 Feb), the new cost of schools dinners for primary schools will be £1.70 with special meals (meals served at Special Schools) reduced to £1.60 and £1.95 for meals at middle and high schools (special meals down to £1.70).

The council also say that in order to help support the Island economy, many more Isle of Wight based ingredients, such as flour, milk, eggs and fresh vegetables, will be used in the preparation of school meals.

All good news!

Isle of Wight Council Cabinet member for Children and Young People Alan Wells said

“The reduction of the cost of school meals is a welcome boost during difficult economic times, and is one I am sure parents will be delighted with. Modern day school meals are very healthy and well balanced and are vital part of a young person’s diet.

“The move will also benefit local produce companies, giving them much needed extra custom. This is fantastic news all round”.
