Graben from top with big crack in road

Council reports on Island Roads’ interventions to seal Graben fault cracks

The Isle of Wight council have advised News OnTheWight that Island Roads continue to monitor the Graben – a known geological fault – very closely.

The Graben is situated on Newport Road, Ventnor, and is the section of road that links Ventnor to Lowtherville (Upper Ventnor).

The council say the highways contractor have intervened in this location several times since the beginning of the highways PFI project in 2013 and will continue to do so as necessary.

Sealing recent cracking
Island Roads plan to take action to seal recent cracking, but say this is best done in dry conditions when the substructure has had the chance to de-water and the sealant itself is more effectively laid.

At the same time, Southern Water also has drainage issues at Newport Road which need to be addressed. So far, Island Roads has liaised with Southern Water to limit work while Leeson Road is closed.

Road may need to close
However should the need for these works become urgent (in order to maintain their infrastructure) then Island Roads will have to consider how these are best managed given the wider traffic issues.

Whether this means a road closure, or temporary traffic lights, will not be known until the event happens.

News OnTheWight will update you once we hear more.
