Council submits plan to partially demolish St Boniface School and replace with housing

A planning application to partially demolish and convert St. Boniface Primary School in Ventnor for residential housing has been lodged on the council’s planning system.

The application for demolition of the single storey extensions alterations and conversion of building to accommodate three two-bed houses, four two-bed flats and two three-bed flats was later withdrawn by the agent acting on behalf of Barry Cooke for the Isle of Wight council.

Application withdrawn
A letter dated 23rd October 2012 from head of planning, Bill Murphy, confirms receipt of the withdrawal.

It’s not clear why the application was withdrawn, but we’ve written to the agent, Arid, to ask for details. We’ll let you know when we hear back.

Update 17.49: Arid tell On The Wight it was the council who chose to withdraw the application.

Part of disposal of assets
The buildings join those on the council’s list of capital assets for disposal following the reorganisation of the education system from three tier to two tier.

The design statement confirms

The disposal of the former St Boniface primary school site, latterly the upper site of St Francis CE & Catholic Primary School on Leeson Road has been approved under the delegated decision relating to surplus school sites and buildings.

The sale of this former primary school site will support the future investment in the school reorganisation programme and deliver Phase 5 and beyond of the Schools Capital Programme at schools across the Island and ensure that our schools are suitable and sufficient for 21st century learning.
