Isle of Wight home composters are being reminded to tend to their bins this winter to ensure the composting process continues throughout the cooler months.
At a time when the composting process naturally slows, keep the momentum going by adding spent bedding plants which will help capture nutrients and give new plants a great start next spring.
Help reduce landfill pressures
About a third of all household waste can be composted, from loo roll tubes to egg boxes to coffee grounds and tea leaves can all be composted. As well as creating your own nutritious compost, it helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Laura Kay, Isle of Wight Council Waste and Recycling Officer, said: “Just because there are no grass cuttings to compost doesn’t mean your compost bin has to go without. Winter vegetable peelings, egg shells, Christmas wrapping paper and even fallen poinsettia leaves will benefit your compost mix, ensuring next year there is plenty of good quality compost for your garden.”
