The public consultation exercise for the future of the Island’s Library Service launched today.
As readers will be aware, the Isle of Wight council intend to close all full-time libraries from the end of March 2011, apart from one in Newport and one in Ryde.
The community are then expected to step up to the plate in order to keep other libraries running, with four libraries open part time for the next year in order to train community members interested in becoming volunteers.

Full details of the Isle of Wight council’s plans for the future of the library service can be found in the consultation document (PDF).
This document explains why the council feel the need to dramatically reduce the service and how they intend to do it.
The document, which also which features pictures of smiling people, ends with an invitation to send comments by email to [email protected], or by letter to Libraries HQ in Cowes. Alternatively, forms will be available at all libraries.
We haven’t been able to find an online form for comments yet, but will update if one comes to light.
