Cricket: Heavy defeat leaves Ventnor bottom

Thanks to Graeme for this latest report from Ventnor Cricket Club. Ed

Ventnor slipped to the bottom of the Southern Electric Premier Division after 97 run loss at fellow strugglers Burridge on Saturday.

On a pitch where run scoring became more difficult as the game wore on, Ventnor would still have been disappointed with their batting performance, only James Cheek (38), Toby Corbin (17) and Neil Westhorpe (16) managing double figures as they crashed to 105 all out.

In the first of the all day matches, the Islanders had enjoyed the best of the pre-lunch and early afternoon session, reducing the home team to 102-5 (Mark Holmes 4-39) before South African all-rounder Geoff Dods with 62 lifted the score to 201-9 declared from 62 overs.

With only one win to their name this season, Ventnor will be looking to get the better of Alton in Saturday’s clash at Newclose at 11.30.

Close finish but Ventnor suffer T20 knock out
A disastrous start to their innings cost Ventnor dearly as Basingstoke & North Hants edged home by two runs in Sunday’s Southern Electric T20 tie at May’s Bounty.

Chasing the home side’s total of 135-7 (Marc-Antony Eysele 2-20), the visitors lost their top five batsmen with only fourteen runs on the board. Neil Westhorpe repaired the damage in partnership with Henry Bartlett (25), but despite the left hander thumping seven fours and two sixes in a fine knock of 68, his departure left Mark Holmes’ team agonisingly short on 133-7.

Narrow defeat for second team against league leaders
A high scoring encounter between Ventnor and Fair Oak ended in a thrilling finish and a one wicket win for the league leaders in Saturday’s Hampshire League Division 1 match at Steephill.

Needing nine runs to win from the final over, the visitors scrambled the two runs still needed from the last ball to leave skipper Ben Woodhouse cursing his lack of bowling depth.
Earlier, the home team had rattled up an impressive total of 281-6 on an excellent pitch, Woodhouse cracking ten fours and two sixes in a splendid innings of 88, with handy contributions from George Niemiec (31), Mark Fletcher (39), Jacobus Hooneberg (38) and Hugh Calloway (24) and Charlie Calloway (22).

Ventnor travel to Fareham & Crofton on Saturday.

Ben Attrill the hero as Ventnor march on
Fourteen year old Ben Attrill produced an astonishing performance to lead Ventnor’s third team to a fifth consecutive win at Knowle Village in Hampshire League Division 4 South East on Saturday.

In an amazing six over spell, the young medium pacer took seven wickets for only four runs, including the coveted hat-trick as a hapless home side were routed for just 30.

The match was over well before tea with Morgan Perrin (24 not out) completing the formalities in a nine wicket success.

Northwood win midweek league contest
An innings of 39 from Ashley Goldsmith helped Northwood to a two wicket win over Ventnor in Tuesday’s T20 league game at Park Road.

The Cowes side were chasing a Ventnor total of 123-7 on an awkward rain affected pitch, Toby Corbin (37) and Martin Blackman (33) top scoring.

Goldsmith (3-27) also impressed with the ball while Mark Holmes conceded just six runs from his four overs for the visitors.
