Cricket: Positive play despite defeat

Graeme shares this latest report from Ventnor Cricket Club. Ed

Ventnor were defeated by reigning champions South Wilts by 25 runs in their British Gas Southern League Premier Division at Bemerton on Saturday.

Though remaining bottom of the table, Mark Holmes’ side produced a spirited performance and with a little more good fortune, could have come away with a welcome and surprising win.

On a flat pitch, the home side totalled 274-5, Ross Whyte taking 2-54 and Dan Cox 1-25, Jack Mynott top scoring with 79.

The Islanders reply was led by Alex Glendenning and Rob Snell with fine knocks of 90 and 71 respectively in a third wicket stand of 152 which took the score to 165. Although Ross Whyte (25) and Holmes (29) edged their side closer, the all out score of 249 left them frustratingly short.

Welcome victory in Hampshire League
The second team secured an important four wicket win over Sarisbury Athletic II at Steephill in Hampshire League Division 1.

Charlie Calloway (3-59), Ben Attrill (2-3) and Hugh Calloway (2-26) helped dismiss the visitors for 175, a total the hosts knocked off inside 28 overs, South African Pierre Kriel thumping an excellent 78. Alex Horton and Ben Attrill supported with 25 and 26 respectively.

T20 win
Rob Snell hit 36 and then took 4-12 as Carisbrooke Old Boys were defeated by 14 runs in the T20 League at Steephill. Andy Ball hit 58 in the visitors’ response of 132-6 to Ventnor’s 148-6.

Under 19s lose at Bournemouth
Ventnor’s under 19 team lost by 40 runs at Bournemouth in the Nat West T20 Under 19 competition on Sunday. Chasing 161 (Tom Leon 3-13, Alex Horton 3-25), the Islanders replied with 120-7, Tom Stafford making 39.

Ventnor face Northwood and Parley in their remaining group matches.
