For most people, a night out at the funfair, conjures up images of candy floss, hook the duck and the thrills of the fairground rides.
Things were a little different at a funfair in Yaverland last night though, when a high speed fairground ride suffered breakage that could have resulted in a fatality.
Islander Pete Ruth, 30, was on the ‘Dance Crazy’ ride at the annual John Matthews travelling fun fair during its opening night at Yaverland.
Metal bar snapped
An eyewitness told us that, “half way through the leaping-frog style ride, thrill seekers witnessed a metal bar holding three chairs together snap in half before the chairs bottomed out on the steel floor. As hundreds of people watched on, the now single chair was flung to the left 90 degrees, leaving Pete hanging on for his life.”
Apparently the ride continued round a further two times, with Pete’s head remaining only inches away from the metal railings. As the ride slowed down, Pete knocked into a ride attendant, as onlookers watched in horror.
“It was all good fun”
Pete was apparently unharmed during the incident and after speaking to him this morning, he seemed pretty unfazed by it all.
“It was all good fun,” he told VB, “I hadn’t even noticed it’d happened.”
