D-Day veterans celebrated during Old Gaffers Festival

Our thanks to Jill Cowley for this report from the Old Gaffers Festival. Ed

On Friday, the Gaffers Committee invited D-Day veterans to a 70th Anniversary commemorative tea at The George.

The Mayor of Yarmouth, Steve Cowley, presented tankards to Yarmouth’s John Maitland and John Verey of Budbridge and a compact set to Mary Ellis, a splendid lady who delivered over 4,000 planes during WWII – over 75 different types. She learnt to fly because she wasn’t very good at hockey at school, so they let her go to the local aerodrome and take flying lessons.

Copies of the Yarmouth and Thorley Voices book were also presented to veterans.

Concours d’Elegance
The mayor’s award for Concours d’Elegance was made to the owners of ‘Sabrina’ at Royal Solent Yacht Club on Saturday evening.

Judging took place in the harbour in the afternoon. Rob Bird accompanied the Mayor round in his boat in order to judge the assembled Old Gaffers.
