More chat from the very lovable Daft Old Duffer. Ed
We’ve upset the Scots again.
This time by claiming haggis is our invention, not theirs.
I’m not clear why this matters so much, but then I’ve never sampled the delicacy.
However, the truth of the matter is surely quite obvious; the haggis was a national dish for all the Islands of Britain when it was almost entirely Celtic.
At a wild guess it was introduced by some Roman soldier who was born and raised somewhere hot and dusty, following which it has died away as a basic food in all the regions where alternatives such as sheep and pigs have been available to the local paysan.
Whereas the Scots of the Highlands, living in less fertile regions, have continued to love it.
In any case, if the Scots want it for their own,as far as I’m concerned, they’re welcome.
